11 - 27 - 2013 Winter storm knocks out power & knocks down a tree on vehicle
The winter storm that blew through our area did cause havoc for one unidentified Juniata Valley motorist. Last night just before 11pm, a large diameter tree fell across US Hwy 522 North in Derry Twp between Peachwood Avenue and Spring Garden Avenue, knocking out power to several homes and snapping a utility pole in half. As a result of the tree being across the roadway, a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt being operated by a 20 year-old Lewistown man collided with the downed tree causing substantial damage to the vehicle, requiring that it be towed. The operator received only minor injuries as a result. The tree was cut into pieces by fire and rescue personnel from East Derry Twp Fire Department and Decatur Twp Fire Department, and removed from the roadway and from on top of the Cobalt. Once the vehicle was removed, the roadway was cleaned and traffic began moving again after approximately one (1) hour and 15 minutes.
