01 - 15 - 2014 Volunteer Fire Companies get an Obamacare break
[TR] - Yielding to pressure from lawmakers and advocacy groups, the Obama administration will issue regulations that exempt volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel from provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The Treasury Department said fire companies will not be required to count the hours of volunteers when determining whether they have to provide health insurance to workers. Edward Mann, the PA state fire commissioner and the chief of the East Derry Fire Company in Mifflin Co. said the news, announced on Friday, is a relief to volunteer fire companies across the state and country, which had been concerned that they would have to pay for health insurance if volunteers logged 30 or more hours a week.
