04 - 07 - 2014 Enviromental issues snag US 322 expansion in Centre Co.
[WJAC] - It's getting batty in the battle to build a continuous 4-lane highway between State College and Harrisburg over the stretch that runs through the Seven Mountains region between Boalsburg and the Mifflin Co. line. PennDOT officials have said the US 322 expansion project is in the first phase of construction already getting underway but environmental concerns may cause detours with the project timeline. It's the same big issue that affected the I-99 expansion in Centre Co. a decade ago having to do with pyrite, which becomes acid rock when exposed from underground. The other concern is about the Indiana bat, that occupies the mountain range through the Potters Mills as its habitat. The bat is a protected species and PennDOT is working with national groups to determine the bats potential impact.
